WebP is an image format developed by Google in 2010 that aims to provide high-quality image compression and smaller file sizes compared to more well-known image formats like JPEG and PNG.

Some of the main benefits of the WebP format are the support of lossy and lossless compression modes, smaller file sizes, support of transparent image backgrounds, browser support, and quality and compression efficiency.

Yes, with the WebP module, you can choose how much you want your pictures to be compressed, to achieve the resolution you are looking for.

One of the key advantages of the WebP format is that it compresses the images significantly without affecting the quality of the images or affecting them minimally.

Update on Installation
by
W Brugger
on 4/1/21, 1:38 PM

I was having trouble installing this.  It turns out that the python dependencies need to be installed as your odoo user, not the root user.
Now I have the module working.  While I think its a good first step, I think it could be improved by adding (if possible) the ability to choose whether an image is webp or not in the website editor.  Also, have the quality setting there.  The one size setting for all images on your website isn't ideal.

Also, it seems that hosted images like unsplash will not be rendered.  This makes sense, but just an FYI.

by
W Brugger

The module wont install even though the OS has the dependencies that are required. Probably a conflict with one of the libraries necessary for V14 (I think a new version of Pillow has been added recently) , but who knows?  Maybe the developer, but since they haven't responded to my ticket, maybe not. I do not recommend purchasing this. UPDATE: My sales order is SO2021/1357771.  I posted a comment on the app page asking for support and through my odoo account "ask the developer for support".  I did this 7 days ago.  Now I get an immediate reply when I post an honest review.

Dear W Brugger,

Please note that your ticket has been created on 03/24/2021, probably you did not noticed but at this dates was odoo.com website and server maintenance. This could be the reason why we did not received email notification and did not treat your issue. However the WEB P module for Odoo is all-ready successfully installed 28 times (except your case) trough marketplace and we always supported our customers. However "Unable to install module "images_to_webp" because an external dependency is not met: Python library not installed: webp" error message can be due several server side settings and configurations (this is server side support). We can provide you this kind of help trough SSH or Any Desk. (drop DM if need help). We are open from 9:00 till 18:00 UTC/GMT +1 Zurich. Regards

Fallback Image reply
by
Jacob Grundy
on 1/26/21, 8:16 PM Confirmed Purchase

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! I'm leaning towards a purchase now but I have some follow up questions before I do.

  • Supporting Jpeg2000 will be fantastic to convert the fallback images as well, but if we have the fallback image then Webp is still superior right? And will we be eligible for the update when it arrives?

  • Would you mind being able to demonstrate the fallback for me either through showing the HTML in Odoo or showing the images on safari vs chrome?

  • I just wanted to be clear on whether this works on product images for the e-commerce side in the shop or just our web pages?

  • When we upload a new Jpeg after the module is installed, I would assume that the Jpeg is kept on the server for later use when working with mobile safari browser?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the support so far!

HI Jacob,

Sorry for late replay.

JPEG2000 will be supported in our next updates. You will have clear explanations and demo shown in Marketplace.

Module converts PNG and JPEG files uploaded after installation both website media and product images.

Yes the original files are stored in case if the browser did not support nextgen filetypes. Images are converted to webp format using tags.

Whidle very interesting, it has to be noted that Webp format is not yet available in all major browsers. Safari is in late. So beware if your visitors comes from macOs.

To check current implementation stase refer to https://caniuse.com/?search=webp
